Eligibility

To be eligible for financial aid, you must have a valid Social Security Number, plan on working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program, and show financial need.

Need is defined as the difference between the cost of attending the college and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC)—the measured ability of a family to pay. If there is a difference between the two, the family may be eligible for aid.

Need-based financial aid is determined by the student and family's financial circumstances. Your EFC will play a major role in the type of need-based aid you receive.

Even if you don't believe your financial circumstances will warrant financial aid, apply anyway. There are many state and privately funded aid programs for which you may qualify. Likewise, certain federal loans, free money programs, Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), and Sallie Mae's Signature Student Loan® program are not based on need.

You'll never know what you may qualify for unless you apply.
