Apply for financial aid

With a little planning and a little organization, applying for financial aid is relatively easy.

Start early. Ideally, begin your school search during your junior year of high school. This is also a good time to begin your search for financial aid. Be sure to ask your prospective colleges about their financial aid programs.

Starting early will help you keep a handle on all application deadlines. Scholarships, grants, school, and federal aid programs each have deadlines. An early start gives you time to assemble the required materials and fill out all the forms.

Don't forget! To be considered for federal financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Try to submit your FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1. This will let the government know that you are looking for financial assistance to help pay for college.

In most cases, receiving financial aid is an annual process. That means you'll have to submit a new application for each academic year you want aid.
