You have reviewed the award letter and are concerned that your savings and the award are not enough to cover all of the education expenses. There are options to obtain the needed funding so your child can attend their top choice school.
- Research scholarship information. It may not be too late to apply-some funds may still be available. Your child's chosen course of study could even have something to offer. Talk to the school's guidance counselor.
- Consider any benefits from your employer. Look beyond tuition and scholarships. Programs might exist to lower the cost of computers, insurance, or travel.
- Investigate payment plans. These plans could spread tuition expenses out over the year. Contact the school's Financial Aid Officer (FAO) for information on availability.
- Verify that any special circumstances were considered. If you are unsure, talk to the school's FAO about your situation.
There are loan options beyond those listed on the award letter. You as parents may qualify to borrow up to the total cost of your child's education minus any aid received via the Federal PLUS Program.
Private loan programs are also available. Your child could qualify for a Signature Student Loan.
And lastly, ask your child's financial aid office about school- and state-specific loan programs.
